Ladies and gentlemen.....
I am so proud of the things you have done. The strides you have made, and the goals you have reached. However, how am I, or anyone else for that matter supposed to know of these things if you don't tell?
The point of this blog is to encourage others and give advice when we cant do it person to person. We have had 4....count em....4 responses in the past three days, and two of those were from coaches! That is not going to inspire anyone!
Developing the healthy mental habits are as important, if not more, than the physical things. The mental aspect leads to continual and permanent change! Blogging and responding to the blogs help with the mental aspect of things.
Please help us help you! BLOG!

WEEK 4! I believe the Paleo eating is now a good habit! I can't believe I have followed this for four weeks! The planning and preparing of food has been challenging with two jobs, family, etc. However, I have made it a priority even if I am cooking at 9:00 at night for the next couple of days. I am enjoying finding new things. I did follow Kerri's advice and not go crazy looking for new recipes. I stick with the salad and chicken for lunches and same breakfast. I tried the cauliflower crust pizza today and it was great! I am loving the workouts and I am feeling better/stronger every time I go to the gym. I work with kids on the weekend and have had them out hiking even in the cold weather and they love it! I told Kerri her talks on Sat. morning really do help keep people motivated. I come every Saturday very frustrated because I am hard on myself and want results right away. I work hard everyday to do the self postive talk and remind myself of my own goals. I have been going out of my comfort zone and trying to talk to new people each time I go to the gym, which is hard for me. I guess I didn't realize over time I have become really private and anti-social...Haha... Thank you to everyone for their honesty and putting themselves out there week after week! Everyone is such an inspiration!

Thank you so much for sharing this great update Kim! I am doing the 2 jobs/family/craziness plan myself and I find simple to be much better for me. Have been eating much of the same things for the past year but feeling full and satisfied just doesn't get old to me, and I really hate cooking.

It is so good to hear what you are saying about the gym!! Keep it up :)

Kim! I love your posts! I have seen a tremendous improvement in you already! Great work! You have recognized that there is no straight path to your end goal... sometimes obstacles or detours get in the way... but you continue on and learn from each speed bump!
I hope stressing less over crazy recipes has helped. I was thinking about posting some of the staples I keep in my home. so here goes... When in doubt... In the fridge... Butter. I keep Spring mix or baby spinach... I've got eggs, my mom has egg muffins she made on Sunday night! I've got taylor ham, or pork sausage, or bacon in the fridge, along with ground beef (preferably grass fed but not always the case).... My kitchen counter has a 3 tier rack on it... bottom tier are my apples and bananas (yes i eat them), then I have nuts... all kinds pecans, walnuts, almonds, pine nuts... i also keep lara bars here... the top is some dark dove chic and organic dark choc and coconut. I also have 2 dishes that match the 3 tier rack of course where I keep... peppers red/yellow.orange... in the other dish its all kinds of onions, garlic, sweet potato, and spaghetti squash.
In my cabinets I keep, canned tomatoes of all kinds! Balsamic vinegars. And Olive oil and a basil, pesto, grapeseed oil which i cook with alot.
I do stray from these staples... but believe it or not... i have made many many meals with these basic foods... changing it up by adding a spice or a diff meat or even a small amount of cheese! yes, i said cheese, but i watch the portion.

When I first started, my grocery cart was full and my bill heavy... but as i realized what i was actually going to eat, how much, what i liked and how it all worked... my bill went down significantly, hence the amount in my cart!

Keep ON!!! Great job!

I am still struggling with the diet. I like the foods but I got on the scale and I know I am not suppose to look at the numbers but "they weren't good" nuts, beef, sausage, fish is pretty much my diet. So this week I told myself i am going to stay away from the scale and just get my workouts in. We will see :/

Linda, In addition, think about filling your plate with either spring mix, baby spinach or some kind of leafy greens also...
So good to see you at the gym tonight... you go girl!

I'm off to my first crunch n punch class with MJ. This is my first class I've taken and I'm a little nervous. So far I've been doing my own cardio and weight training. Ill let you all know how it goes, I'm sure it will be great!

Jarratt, it may be too late for you with this message, but MJ had to cancel Crunch & Punch this morning due to the 2-hour school delay. She is coming to the gym after she gets the kids to school, per her Facebook post. So you may have to wait a week for C & P, but I hope you get to the gym anyhow :)

This blogging stuff is a bit hard for me. So here goes to stepping out of my comfort zone. It is really hard for me to put myself out there. I always have negative thoughts in the back of my head like what are these people going to think about me. I talked to Kerri a little bit last night about this and she gave me some postive feedback and a bit of motivation. I am going to do something I really wouldnt have before and take a spin class tonight and Cross training class next Monday. I am very nervous and exciting at the same time.

Three cheers for you stepping out of your comfort zone! I go to all the Crosstrain classes so please look for me, I will help you!- Kim S

Ok so tonight went really well. Better than I expected. On the way there tonight I told Allison how nervous I was. I think that was more because I didnt know what to expect. I had fun and got a good work out at the same time. I not sure I was putting my all into this program mostly out of fear and the unknown. Like you said you can say you want to be healthier but that is only the start. Today has been a huge turning point for me. I am very proud of myself for facing this head on. It is not very often I have been able to say I am proud of myself but I truely am. I look forward to taking the Cross training class on Monday.

OMG, that is what we all thought when we first tried to get ourselves into the gym, "what are the people going to think about me"? Well, let me tell you something, ask anyone who does the cross training classes and their answer will be "are you kidding me, I am struggling over here, that I don't have time to be looking to see what you are doing"? LOL we joke about this all the time. You may think that people are looking at you but trust me they aren't for the reasons you may think. They are probably thinking, I remember being there and I wonder if they need help, and then will be right there for you. Or they are thinking about how far they have come and are proud of themselves not thinking bad of you by any means. Trust in DF and the members. They will be your support system and become good friends you can rely on for encouragement and strength. We are a great family and eager and happy to help, don't be afraid to ask, trust me, it makes us feel good to help. Good luck on your journey!!!

I am so upset about missing crosstrain last night(I was a wimp about the roads). I get upset when I have to miss a class. I really look forward to them so much. Originally, was nervous about joining the gym. I would take my kids to classes there and when I would pick them up, I would stand a think to myself that I really need to do classes, but I never would. I would actually watch some of the retired teachers from my children's school go in for class, and that is what first got me in the door, after a long time of just watching. Then, I used to only come to classes when I had a buddy to be there with me. But my normal buddies have since dropped off for whatever reason, and I still look forward to going to the classes. No matter what the class that I go to, and even if there is no one there that I know, everyone is so welcoming and encouraging. Doing classes are the BEST motivation!!! I also try to do my own thing, but I find that being in the class setting I challenge myself so much more than I ever believed that I could. It is such an amazing feeling, after I catch my breath, to realize what I just did during the class. Thank you DF for pushing me and getting me out of my comfort zone.

I am SO PROUD OF YOU!!!! to attend classes on your own!!! most people give up when their "buddy" gives up... not you!! You realize that you do like coming to class and have learned to motivate yourself to get there! Great work!
I will not fault anyone for being cautious on a potentially dangerous drive... We had a great class... but let's just say, you weren't the only one missing. There are many days left in the week. Try to fit in an extra exercise session somewhere to make up for missing... if you can't fit it in, no worries.... move on... just keep making healthy, mindful conscious decision! After all... You have got a "live-in" coach!! although... hmm18 year old boy... he may not be your best (in-home)cheerleader now! he will be in a few years tho ;-) I'm sure many others can relate!

Thank you DF and member, you are the greatest thing to happen to me!!!!!! The support of all of you (and you each know who you are) has been tremedous and greatly needed and appreciated! My last week has been pure Hell to say the least and has been a challenge to stick to paelo, but for the most part I have and so very proud of myself. Today was a challenge when I went into the kitchen here at work to get my morning cup of tea. One of the other girls had brought it chocolate chips cookies and sugar cookies. On my third trip to the kitchen to reheat my tea, I took them and moved them into a cupboard so that I didn't have to look at them every time I walked in there. I grabbed 3 stalks of celery and had my almond butter with them! BAMMMM, I did it, NO COOKIES!!!!!!!! As a group, and the support system we have, we can all do this!!!! GO Team Cave wo man...

And just like that... another amazing feat of strength, courage, will-power... self-discipline! I'm smiling so big for you right now!! Job well done my friend! You realize those cookies may satisfy your thoughts at the time... but your actions would cause havoc on your feelings then your thoughts... and oh my the cycle would begin! Great job with your conscious decision to remain true to your goals!
Because a small immediate fix on sugar sure isn't going to help you later when the "sugar high" wears off!!!
Great Work!!!

Way to go Linda!!!! I have been doing cross training for about a year now and I still like to hang out in the back. We all have a great time at those classes. We all struggle no matter how long we doing it. Remember that even though we have been at it for a bit we are moving up with heavier weights and so we are not really any different at the ease of doing the exercises. We all grubble under our breath till class is over, but all in good fun! Hope to see you at the next class!!!

I have been exhausted, overwhelmed and stressed outt. I try taking one day at a tome but there is only so much I can do in a day. I can't focus in school and have a hard time concentrating when I study. I have been trying to make it.to the gym as often as I can and have recorded lectures to listening when I run to try to get more study time in. I have noticed over the past few weeks that my body is wiped out to the point of exhaustion after any exercise. Even yoga at home is a chore. I have been following the diet, decreased my coffee intake and increased water Intake. Beyond frustrated, not sure what to do. seeing my doctor tonight

Dawn,
Best wishes at the doctor tonight. Being overwhelmed with a busy schedule may be taking its toll on you. You are unable to relax and live. Remember, all of your hard work at school will pay off, and things will get easier. Remember, BALANCE in life is key. It may take some give and taking with your schedule..
I wish the best for you tonight. Keep making healthy food choices, exercise as you can... remember 15 min is better than none... Really! So... don't spend too much time at the gym... make sure you are eating enough... and make time to play with Matt too!
You will find Balance, keep trying!

What is the best way to get calcium into our diet?

Reply
Kerri
1/29/2013 01:47:36 am

In the U.S., calcium intake is one of the highest in the world. Yet paradoxically, we also have one of the highest rates of bone de-mineralization (osteoporosis). Bone mineral content is dependent not just upon calcium intake but upon net calcium balance (calcium intake minus calcium excretion). Most nutritionists focus upon the calcium intake side of the calcium balance equation, however few realize that the calcium excretion side of the equation is just as important.
Bone health is substantially dependent on dietary acid/base balance. All foods upon digestion ultimately must report to the kidney as either acid or base. When the diet yields a net acid load (such as low-carb fad diets that restrict consumption of fruits and vegetables), the acid must be buffered by the alkaline stores of base in the body. Calcium salts in the bones represent the largest store of alkaline base in the body and are depleted and eliminated in the urine when the diet produces a net acid load. The highest acid-producing foods are hard cheeses, cereal grains, salted foods, meats, and legumes, whereas the only alkaline, base-producing foods are fruits and vegetables. Because the average American diet is overloaded with grains, cheeses, salted processed foods, and fatty meats at the expense of fruits and vegetables, it produces a net acid load and promotes bone de-mineralization. By replacing hard cheeses, cereal grains, and processed foods with plenty of green vegetables and fruits, the body comes back into acid/base balance which brings us also back into calcium balance.

I will say to all of you that everybody has been in your shoes when it comes to taking ANY of the classes at Dedicated for the first time. You look around & see the people and think to yourself, whatever made me think I could do this??? Stay for class & get to know the people. You will never be sorry you did it. I look back at some of the things I've accomplished in the couple of years I've been going to Dedicated and I KNOW for a fact that they are things I never would've done or even thought of attempting to do without the training & support you get in all of the classes. Dedicated has the best classes & the most awesome group of people you will ever workout with. Everybody, whether they have been taking classes for some time or just starting out, is always willing to help you. Enjoy the journey & say hi to all of your new friends that you now have!!

You are going to LOVE it - seriously I can't think of any other exercise I love more than crosstraining, almost a year and a half later and I love it just as much as the first day, except now I'm not a blithering nervous mess! Not only has it challenged my limits physically and mentally, but it is literally responsible for helping me become less of a klutz, and that is really saying something!

How I am feeling lately. Tired and frustrated, Tired from work a full time teaching job, a second job, and taking grad courses. Frustrated that I am tired and therefore not putting the prep into my meals that I know I need. It is an awful cycle to fall into. BUT! I am staying on top of my work outs which makes me feel energetic and happy, also another lovely cycle. SO yes - tired and frustrated but not fully discouraged because I will pick myself up and get my s**t back together because this is the life I want for myself and the life I deserve. :)

Kim, if you were not struggling, would you be getting a good workout? It is supposed to be hard! If it is hard to the point where you cant do something, ask one of the trainers! We are always more than willing to modify something for you. Also, just getting back into it, make sure that you pace yourself. Dont try to keep up with anyone else. Just read dawn m' s prognosis-- thyroid problem. Me too, diagnosed before the challenge as an inactive one. Started meds but definitely have more energy since eating this way. Just wandering if I would've started this sooner if it would have prevented it. Doc said I will have to stay on med for the rest of my life. I have a follow-up for blood work but I'm going to wait for a few more weeks.
