Paleo at the (grocery) store

1/7/2013

Have you been grocery shopping yet with your Paleo list? If you only have to shop for Paleo, isn't it so nice to be able to stick to the outside of the store. Produce!!!! If you have to shop for non-paleo peeps in your home, then the grocery store is the way to go.
If you don't have to shop for non-paleo people, here is something to ponder....do you buy organic? Do you buy from local vendors? How far does your food travel? I don't want to to over think this. However, i did want to give you some options for local stuff.

Mountain Springs Farm: left side on 209 towards Lehighton coming from Country Junction. They sell
grass fed beef and pork, whole chickens, turkey, and eggs. Fresh organic vegetables and
                   blueberries in season.

Pure Sprouts: based out of the Lehigh Valley, this company will actually deliver fresh foods. Organic
and natural products from local farms. You get to choose (almost like a farmers market)
what you want. Even things like almond butter! The problem is, they need at least 10
people in your area to deliver. We have been trying to get a list together, so if your'e
interested, reply and we'll try to get something going.

Country Harmony: Right in front of the Giant in Lehighton. They sell natural and organic products.

Please reply if you know anywhere else to get great Paleo foods! Also, if you're interested in the Pure Sprouts delivery. Keep building that confidence! It all comes down to you and the people you surround yourself with. Thats why you have us!

Well done Dekota and Allison! It is a lot quicker because you don't have to go through the whole store! Another benefit of Paleo....less time at the grocery store!

Good job. Now If I only did shopping I could say something. I am blessed that I dont have to cook and Nikki does all the cooking.

I went Sunday and if it wasn't green or red it didn't go in my basket. I also went with the hand held basket to avoid the temptation of walking down the isles. I will say it was such a challenge sticking to the lifestyle upon returning to work.

I am financially challenged right now but still try to go as local/natural as possible.

Here is a great site, Buy Local PA: http://www.buylocalpa.org/
You can do all kinds of searches for farms/farmer's markets, etc.

For dairy and cheese, there is a great farm right around the corner from my son's Vo-Tech school, so I make sure to consolidate my trips and stop in there each time I'm near it. When I do use milk, it is raw milk from this farm, straight from the cow :) This is Klein Farm, Forks Township (Easton), PA.

Even while shopping at a conventional grocery store, I take time to read the labels and think about where the food comes from. Some stores in Carbon County have eggs that come from Heidel Hollow Farms in Slatington, which are going to be fresher than eggs that were shipped halfway across the country to a 'big box store.'

There are also great organic deals at Sam's and BJ's, and when you buy in bulk, meal planning is easier. I "borrow" space in my mom's chest freezer for when I get a great deal. Larger families might want to look into purchasing 1/4 or 1/2 cow directly from the farmer.

A friend of mine out near Kutztown recommends this farm: http://www.mbfarviewfarm.com/ (their website also has a great "Buyer Beware" section pertaining to farmer's markets).

I have been Paleo grocery shopping for 2 weeks now and LOVE it! So much faster (and less people to deal with). Question on the almond butter, is it okay to go with sunflower seed butter instead? It was way cheaper. :)

Yes!! You can! There is a great app I recommend ... It's called Nerd Fitness, Paleo Central... It's .99 but worth it!
Totally describes the food lifestyle and you can search any food and it will give you a thumbs up or down!

Hi Kristen! Over the past year, I have used almond butter, sunflower seed butter, and cashew butter. All were super-yummy and all are "legal" on Paleo as long as they are natural and without any crazy added ingredients (I always look for those, no matter what the brand/food item). Sounds like you are doing great!

I personally do not like to eat much before cross training or spinning, but if I do, I go for something like 1/2 of a Larabar or a handful of nuts. If I would for some reason wake up starving, I'll make a flaxseed "mug muffin." I usually carry some almonds with me at all times, as my "go to" snack. I even keep them in my bicycle seat bag when I ride outdoors.

Typically, I eat a pretty late dinner (8 ish) and then I get up and drink water and maybe one cup of coffee, and then cross-train at 9 a.m. I am just NOT hungry before I go. This may be the case for you as you get further along with this way of eating. Hope that helps :)

Merkel Farm & Nursery is a good place for seasonal organic produce in the Mahoning Valley/Lehighton area (209 Washington Rd, Mahoning Township, Lehighton, PA 18235).

The "Mug Muffin"

I use this in a pinch when I am craving the bread type of stuff. It fills me up for a long time. I do sometimes add the protein powder after a workout, but that is optional.

"MUFFIN IN A MINUTE"
1/4 cup ground flaxseed (this is a lot of flaxseed--beware!)
1 TBS. vanilla protein powder (optional)
1/2 tsp. baking powder
Sweetener to taste (optional, but I do use stevia/Truvia if I'm craving it a little sweeter)
Cinnamon to taste

In a coffee mug:
Melt 1 TBS coconut oil or use 1 TBS olive oil
Mix in one egg
Mix in dry ingredients
Nuke in microwave--one minute. (Mine takes 90 seconds)

I keep the dry ingredients pre-mixed in sandwich bags in the fridge for when I'm short on time.

One of these babies will fill you up for hours. I use a really tall coffee mug because it expands amazingly well in there. If you are a butter user (butter is not strict Paleo), you can slice this up and melt some butter into it. I have also dipped it in a little of that amazing Trader Joe's Coconut oil!

I have never made this recipe with the olive oil, but my friend I got it from uses that. The coconut oil is my favorite, so I use that.

Well this is going to be my very first total paleo shopping trip this weekend. I tell my son if it is not paleo approved he needs to put it on the list or I am not buying it. His response was, I don't want it if you can't eat it. Yeah, my son!! LOL

Shannon, that is so awesome that your son is excited about it too. Having support at home makes it all easier. My son is 22 but will eat whatever I bring into the house. The only non Paleo thing he asks for is soy milk & cereal. I just buy him cereal I don't like & then there is no temptation for me....lol

Here is an awesome recipe that I made tonight!

Butternut Squash chopped up (pre chopped at Wegmans!)
1 red onion
Garlic and Herbs infused Olive Oil
Toss them in a little bit of oil
Roast them at 450 degrees for about 30 min
Toss with fresh baby spinach

So Tasty! I pared that with a sirloin steak that I sliced up and marinated in the garlic and herb infused Olive oil with some some extra seasonings and sauted it and put it right on top of the squash, onion, and spinach mixture.

Meal complete in only 30 min -- so easy and so tasty. Now if I can only figure out how to post a picture I would show you my lovely concoction!
:-)

Could you give us some more info on Pure Sprouts? I am also one of those financially challenged people so I was just wondering do we have to have a minimum order & once you start it, is it like an automatic delivery kind of thing? And how do their prices compare to shopping at the store? Just some of the questions I thought of off the top of my head.

Would love to know more about the pure sprouts too. Sounds like something we could all benefit from. However, like some of the others, the cost of paleo to start is a bit overwhelming. I think once we have some of the oils and flours and such (which I assume will take a bit to use up) it won't be so much. Please let us know more on this or if there is a website or flyer they have that would work to. Thanks.

When I read that you should shop the perimeter of the grocery store, I laughed, how can that be? Surprise, it was correct.
After getting the initial staples at the first shopping trip, I went to Giant on Monday and really surprised myself, I only needed to shop the perimeter. It only took a few minutes and I was finished. I like this way of shopping!
