Finding alternatives to foods you can't live without

1/10/2013

We all have foods we cant live without. Now, finding they are not on the paleo approved list, we find it hard to beat those cravings. Throughout my journey, I have had to find out what might be some healthy, paleo friendly alternatives to keep myself on track. Here are some things I have found to help me. This blog will be dedicated to helping each other find alternatives to those foods that we so dearly love. Lets help each other!

Bread - Ezekiel bread (sprouted grains which are live and easily digestible for your body. These
sprouted grain breads can be found in the frozen organic section of your local grocer)
Mashed potatoes - mashed cauliflower (a bit sweeter, but still yummy)         http://angieanew.com/mashed-roasted-cauliflower/ (courtesy of team member Nikki)
Milk chocolate - dark chocolate (sparingly, see previous post)
Baked potatoes - sweet potatoes
Chips - sprouted grain pita (cut up into chip shape, oil and spices, and bake!

Here is one of the best lists of "substitutes" I have found all in one place (It is Primal, however, not strict Paleo, but there are some wonderful choices here and I aim to try more of them):

I'm looking forward to trying Ezekiel bread. I had a cooked sweet potato last night; I'm enjoying some foods I had neglected for the sake of convenience. Thanks for sharing the link, Karen...Lots of interesting choices!

I totally agree Christina! I avoided sweet potatoes like the plague at Thanksgiving, and now I cant get enough of them. Of course any starches in moderation....but love the alternative!

I want to try this SO bad too - the healthfood store in Easton carries it, so hopefully I can stop in sometime soon:

Ryan I never ate them either and then like 2 years ago Nikki made them and they were get. I actually prefer them over regular potatoes anyway.

I tried Ezekial bread and lovedit. I toasted it and spread almond butter on it. It is a dense bread which I prefer anyway. I bought mine at Wegmens.

I have come to love roasted veggies - broccoli, cauliflower, etc. Add some olive oil, salt, pepper and bake 350degrees about 20 min. Kale chips are great also. Remove thick veins from the kale, cut into pieces, add olive oil, salt, pepper and bake in oven 'til edges curl up and turn darker. They are best crispy. Kale was the "super food" for 2012.

I just made this!! Patience and lots of it. Although she states 20 mins, it took me about 30. You have to resist the urge to stop the processor once it gets to the "large mass that moves around the bowl". It will continue to move and the bowl will get hot. It will work. Trust me. I am going to send the pic to Kerri so she can post here!

This morning at breakfast club after running club, it was awesome talking to the others doing the Paleo side of the challenge and get some awesome ideas. One of the things that came up in our discussions when talking about recipes was to throw it out there to see if people would be interested in getting together once a month, whether it be a day the gym is available or maybe take turns hosting it at your house, have everyone bring a Paleo dish. This would be a great way to try new dishes & exchange recipes. It would also be a great way to keep up the support after the 7 week challeng. Its just one of the things that came up & wanted to throw it out there if anyone would be interested.

I can't take credit for the idea, it wasn't mine I just wanted to throw it out there so it didn't get pushed aside or forgotten about. But something I also thought of that I wasn't sure to add it to this post or Ryan's newest post. If we do the exchanging of recipes, why don't we include our spouses or significant others? This might help them understand what we are doing & maybe instead of being sabotagers they may turn into your biggest cheerleaders or even jump on the paleo train with you!!

Went to dinner with friends last night and made some good choices and one slip up. I had crab encrusted grouper served over seafood risotto with steamed veggies. I tasted the risotto when I picked the seafood out of it but I didn't eat it. I resisted the bread that was served with the meal but I had a glass of white wine instead of red, it went better with the fish but instead of a second glass of wine I had a glass of water! When we returned home instead of having that glass of beer with everyone I chose water. I put the water in a goblet with lemon and pretended i was having a fancy drink! My bracelet made me do it!!!!!

Ann Im so proud of you! Like ive said. Of course there are going to be times where we slip. You have shown the willpower it takes to get through those tough social situations. You are never going to eat perfectly all the time, its impossible. But even when you do make those little slips, you chose to make sure the next choice was a good one. Well done! To both you and the bracelet! haha

I drank water! Tbe bracelet made me do it!!!!!!! Yeah me!

Celebrated my dad's 92nd birthday yesterday...with a beautiful chocolate cake with peanut butter icing. I knew it was happening, so I brought along some apple slices, cheese cubes and cashews. I thought I wouldn't be able to resist the cake, but I did. Then everyone else joined me in feasting on the apples, etc. Yes, I ate very few cheese cubes.
