But why?

In starting a new lifestyle, there are always soooooo many questions. So I, and the coaches would like to answer any that you may have. Why are we doing it a certain way for the program? Why am i not allowed to eat beans? Why not eat snacks in between each meal? Why does Ryan smell so bad? Just seeing if you were still paying attention. Please ask freely. This will also help come up with more specific topics for Saturdays meeting.
Keep up the progress and stay positive! So proud of you all!

How did you first hear about Paleo and what was your motivations for giving it a try? (And why does Ryan smell bad?)

Dekota and Karen,
Honestly, I didnt even know about Paleo until Kerri started it. I saw how it changed her mood, and energy levels, and thought why not. It also didnt hurt that I had just recently started a weight loss challenge with my family. I thought to myself....better energy, no up and down moods, chance at significant weight loss, definite physique change....why not give it a try? I couldnt be more happy. I realize i will never eat perffectly. I do feel guillty when i cheat, but then my wife reminds me how I am eating regulary now compared to how i used to eat and it makes me feel better. Change is good. Paleo change is fantastic!
And in regards to the smell thing...i wouldnt say its bad....just my natural body odoure (thats french so it smells better). haha

Ryan, why did you first try it? And why do I smell worse than you do? :)

Why not eat snacks between each meal? Is this true?

I was just working and thinking of the blog,
so you asked - more questions!!

What has been the most difficult part of adhering to the Paleo way of eating for you?

What, in your opinion, has been the biggest benefit in your life from folloiwing the plan?

Did you tell anyone in mainstream medicine you eat this way and, if so, what was his/her response?

What has been the most important mental aspect of sticking with your plan?

Do I ask too many questions?

Karen....to answer all of your questions:
1) sweet tooth, moderating the dark chocolate
2) cant say one; body composition change and energy levels
3) i have, they support the idea of it, though they are not nutritionists
4) having alternatives and great support around me; all about willpower!
5) never too many questions!

Allison,
Eating snacks between meals ok. Just dont regulate yourself to making sure you always eat snacks between meals. Eat when you are hungry. If you skip lunch and have a snack before dinner thats ok. Listen to your body. The whole thought process behind no snacks is the caveman lifetstyle. They would eat sporadically. When they had food, they would binge, and then they might not eat for a couple days. Our bodies arent genetically capable of keeping up with 5 to 6 meals a day, it cant burn all of the excess nutrients.

why is it that when i eat something now that i usually ate before going paleo i get bad headaches? maybe its just mental but my boyfriend is following this too and he has had the same issue. Needless to say it makes it much easier to stay on the paleo path. Also what things do you allow yourselves that arent paleo ?

The headaches are your body's way of telling you NO! This is not good for me and i am going to fight you on it! Yes, it doesn make it easier to eat right. I usually get an upset stomach when i eat bad foods, to each their own.
Foods that are non paleo: cheese, sprouted grains (pasta, bread, etc), sometimes beans or corn in chilli. nothing else very often.

I was talking to my chiropractor about my lifestyle change and he also recommends a total body cleanse. What are your thoughts? Did you do a cleanse?

Lisa,
I have never done a cleanse before, but I would understand the justification of why. You are trying to get your body to get used to a new lifestyle and new nutrients/foods. So why not get the old ones out? I dont know if i would be able to do it (depending on how they are recommending) due to the lack of solid foods. Keep me in the loop on what you decide and how/if it works. Thanks!

Why am I hungry two hours after I eat a full meal of veggies and meat? I thought the Paleo diet was supposed make me less hungry and not have to snack?

Kim,
You are contradicting yourself! haha. How can you say it was a full meal if you are still hungry? You have to throw the past out the window when eating Paleo. What you considered to be a full meal in the past might be too much at some times, and not nearly enought at other times. Listen to your body! Eat slow, if you are still hungry when you are done eating, and it has taken you a while (20 minutes) to eat it, go back for some more! If you need to snack, you know you didnt eat enought, so snack! Listen to your body. I think thats one of the best things about Paleo, it is hard to eat too much or too little because there is no real definition of what a standard meal shoudl look like.

I was given the food pyramid chart that shows meat, fish and eggs on the bottom tier, veggies next tier, fruits next and finally nuts/berries. So does that mean I should try to stick with the meat/fish/eggs as the main focus and limit the nuts/berries???? I find myself eating mostly fruit, almond butter, cashews or almonds and larabars all day and then my supper is meat/salad/veg. I am not usually hungry but getting tired of same old stuff.

On a positive note for myself, I have notice not only less hunger and more energy (mood has greatly improved) but I also no longer have the "bathroom issues" I had before. For me this is an amazing feat in itself.

Congrats on the improvements Connie! Yes, meats and vegetables should be your focus. While almond butter and larabars are paleo, you still want to make sure youre not overdoing it on one thing. The nuts and fruits would be at the top, so you want to moderate how much you eat of those two things. Of course eat them, and let them be your "go to." But dont get caught up in a rut eating those same things all the time. Switch it up!

All this talk about snacking!!! What's the best the thing to do; eat a meal or snack after a workout? (Keep in mind not everybody works out first thing in the am or at night) also what food items are better after a workout? I know after cardio and lifting the first thing I think about isn't food, it's an ice cold water!

Jarrat, love the water idea! Just make sure you are hydrating enough DURING your workout. You shouldnt be dying of thirst after your workout. Hydrate throughout the day.
In regards to eating after a workout, it is really what your body responds to. I usually dont eat for a couple of hours after a workout, but some people make sure they eat within a half hour of their workout. There is research to support almost any side you take. I would say if you are going to eat right after, focus on the proteins (meats, nuts). If you eat later, make it a balanced meal.

I only eat when I am hungry, no matter what! I always drink a bunch after working out, but if I am not hungry for hours afterward, or if it is close to bedtime, I won't eat at all. The best part of this diet to me is not being hungry all the time :)

I may not be able to eat till 8:30 or later some nights and I'm not hungry till then too. How late is too late and how long should you wait to go to bed? I have been drinking a hot tea at night too with a touch of honey. Is there anything wrong with that?

I find that I am not hungry all the time. I also find that I don't have mood swings, which didn't dawn on me until someone else mentioned it. I am less tired. I also am having a hard time breaking "food timing" habits. I still get up and put something in my mouth within 30 mins of waking. I am trying to listen to my body now and find its working better. I am also still afraid of not having something to eat before I workout. I have been using a larabar at times. (Don't want to buy the protein powder I had been using in the past). So this is something I will need to work on yet as well.

Oh and I also have trouble finding time to eat depending on where i am working. So far I haven't gotten any trouble when I say I need to go eat because I am hungry. I really need to break the habit of standing while eating at work. This profession (nursing/EMS) doesn't afford you time to sit and eat all the time. Otherwise I am being very mindful. How about the rest of you?

It took me YEARS to break myself of eating while standing, eating while driving, and all those bad things I picked up volunteering on the ambulance. I am still "immune" to caffeine from that time in my life, I could drink half a pot of coffee and go straight to sleep afterwards.

What I did was concentrate on one habit at a time, first I stopped eating while driving, then I worked on the standing while eating, then it was picking from the kids' plates and leftoevers, and finally I conquered my urge to eat while cooking (still make non-paleo for the kids).

I have been at this for over a year, so I'm practiced at being mindful. It is a total mindset switch over the "jam it in quick" stress eating I did in my past.
